Project Description:
Applied Power Services was selected to install (16) 480VDC, flooded battery strings at Verizon’s Network Equipment Center (NEC). The NEC manages their wireless network in the western U.S., operating Verizon’s 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) communications network. The Center is comprised of approximately 106,000 total sq ft on two levels. This Colorado Springs facility is currently served by utility power, supported by two generators providing N+1 emergency power redundancy to critical systems.
APS teamed with General Contractor, GKK Works on this $40M project. GKK Works ranks #365 on Engineering News-Record (ENR)’s Top 400 Contractors.
Construction centered on the renovation and electrical upgrades to the existing NEC and also the construction of a new building housing (6) 3MW backup generators. The scope of work included: new 10MW/34.5kV utility service with associated AC and UPS power distribution, upgrades to the building automation, security systems, upgraded fire protection systems, exterior modifications to support a new generator building, new medium voltage switchgear yard, and new exterior heat rejection equipment.
Applied Power Services portion of the work included:
- The setting of 1,920 2-volt, C&D Technologies, Flooded Batteries
- Construction of three-tier high battery racks including hammer drilling and setting of hundreds of ½” Hilti wedge anchors.
- Placement of Enviroguard’s Eagle liner system under each of the three-tier battery racks.
- Strapping batteries into a series of (8) 480VDC systems
- Tab installation for Cell Watch Battery Monitoring System
- Testing using Midtronics equipment of all batteries
- Removal of two 480VDC flooded battery strings that provided temporary power to the sites “A” feeds.
The second phase, or the “B” phase of this project was a replica of the “A” phase. APS installed (8) 480VDC flooded battery strings of the same model battery on the opposite side of the data center.
